Life in the UK Test Preparation Course

The Life in the UK test is a computer-based, multiple-choice test that checks your knowledge of British history, traditions, laws, government and everyday life. It is run by the Home Office and is a requirement for most people applying for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) or British citizenship (naturalisation).

The test questions come from the official handbook, Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents (3rd edition). Our Life in the UK test preparation course walks you through every chapter of the handbook, explains the topics that people often find difficult, and lets you practise with mock questions so you know what to expect on the day.

Important: The Life in the UK test fee is paid to the Home Office when you book your test on GOV.UK. It is separate from the fee for our preparation course. Always book through the official GOV.UK website only.

• Number of questions: 24 multiple-choice questions
• Time allowed: 45 minutes
• Pass mark: 75% (you must answer at least 18 questions correctly)
• Test fee: £50 per attempt, paid on GOV.UK (some out-of-hours slots may cost more)
• Test centres: Over 30 centres across the UK
• Booking: Online, at least 3 days before your test date
• Retakes: There is no limit on attempts, but each new attempt needs a new booking and fee, and you must wait before rebooking after a fail

You usually need to pass the test if you are applying for:

• Indefinite leave to remain (settlement) in the UK
• British citizenship by naturalisation or registration (for adults)

Who Is Exempt?

You do not need to take the test if you are under 18 or 65 or over. You may also be exempt if you have a long-term physical or mental condition that prevents you from taking the test. Your immigration adviser can confirm what applies to your case, and the full rules are on GOV.UK.

Our course follows the five chapters of the official handbook that the test is based on:

1. The Values and Principles of the UK

Democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, tolerance and participation in community life.

2. What Is the UK?

The countries of the UK, the Crown Dependencies, the Overseas Territories and key facts about geography and population.

3. A Long and Illustrious History

Important events and people from early Britain through the Middle Ages, the Tudors and Stuarts, the Industrial Revolution and the two World Wars.

4. A Modern, Thriving Society

Customs and traditions, religion, sport, arts and culture, and places of interest across the UK.

5. The UK Government, the Law and Your Role

How Parliament and the devolved governments work, the justice system, voting, and the rights and responsibilities of living in the UK.

Test-Day Skills

You will also learn how to plan your revision, manage your time, practise with mock questions, avoid common mistakes and stay calm during the test.

1. Go to the official booking page at gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test.
2. Enter your details exactly as they appear on your ID.
3. Choose a test centre and a date at least 3 days ahead.
4. Pay the test fee by debit or credit card.
5. Save your confirmation and take it, with your ID, on test day.

ID Documents You Need

You must bring the same ID you used to book. This is usually a valid passport or a biometric residence permit, and if you have an eVisa you may need to use a share code when booking. Your name and details must match your booking exactly, otherwise you may be refused entry and lose your fee. Accepted ID can change, so check the current list on GOV.UK before you book.
